Intentions workshop - Drawing task.

Monday afternoon session consisted on an intresting talk of allowing some insights of various artists work to which gave me personally some tips of how to present work in a sketchbook form, note form, artwork. it was intresting to see how these artists work and what they focus on in their works. a lot of note taking and information was involved, to sum the talk up it was inspiring and very intresting.
The workshop being based on responding to words, hanging visual 'stuff' on a abstract word. from that senetence its sounds challenging and it was for me personally,  as I felt like compared to everyone else I didn't have enough visual research and even more my work was all small in a A4sketchbook. but from the task being challenging it was helpful and allowed me to draw In different techniques and to help me realise what I was drawings whilst view finding interesting areas to respond to.
The 6 words I chosen were Simple, Graphic, faint, Overlaid and rhythmic. These certain words I felt did base themselves with theme and that they could hopefully open up further visual research to my work to get it started.

Simple I felt reflected the minimal side of the theme and chosen a blue pen to work with as its a soft colour but comparing to my other words and to the work created, I felt it was too simple. Graphic was for the geometric side to complex and as a thought to mainstream wallpaper it is much graphic, from the graphic drawing it was more rectangle shapes instead of circular which I felt worked well as was showing I was introducing more shapes into my work.

Faint was a challenging of creating this faint approach to my
work, my work is very bold normally so faint was the challenge for me as it is not the norm for me to create. But I combined the two shapes with my faint work. On the picture you may see the faint circular shapes leading onto faint lines to create a grid effect and then to have bold colours involved to contrast with the faint lines.
The workshop today has pushed me to draw a lot more and bigger, not to keep in my sketch book as much. Needing to let this work evolve, and by starting a drawing workshop first thing on a Monday has actually benefited me to get on with the rest of the week.

Intentions- PDP Feedback

Being the first tutorial it went surprisingly well and very helpful. Feedback towards my work was fair to say being a sketchbook full of drawings during the summer, but now it was time to get out the sketch book and get onto larger scale hopefully soon. My only issue being I felt I needed more visual research to extend the theme further. From the summer work and googling the theme meanings, I have started to pick out shapes involved in my work of circular shapes mainly to which I'm finding the word complex to be taken into a geometric theme which then allows me to fit into the wallpaper design area. But more visual research will allow me to add more ideas.
Alex was confident that the body of work was good and I could further it but if I felt the need to further the visual side then I may. It wasn't the work that was the issue he felt like I needed to not overthink the theme, it was more of allowing myself to evolve which meant my work would evolve, patterns, colours, textures hopefully evolving more and allowing myself to 'GO FOR IT'.  Presenting my brief draft during the tutorial,  I was surprised of it being acceptable and only tweaking it a little of how am I going to get started?
In agreement with the comments I feel more aware now of how to approach this project. Needing to relax a little and to trust myself and my judgements of creating quantity instead of quality.
The quantity side is the main focus this week of producing further visual research by gathering pictures, drawings and to 'GO FOR IT'.

Inspirations workshop

From the summer project it was clear there was as development element in my work instead of quick drawings, you could see a theme was occurring a lot in the work to which gave the group an insight of how and where this ‘idea’ was going, as I introduced myself I said wallpaper design/ interiors. So the theme or idea was heading into wallpaper and some being interior designs. The group seemed to agree that the theme and ideas were very well thought out and strong pieces with good use of different media being involved, to which I do agree I did try to use different types of media to reflect textures.

From the pictures shown to which the group had seen they agreed that print was the best specialism for me as my work is very print like. But it was hard to tell as yet of which way of print was I wanting to go of digital or screen - I do enjoy both but I feel at the moment in could go both ways of combining the two but who knows. For the improvement I would say to not get so fixated on one area as mentioned it was a theme or concept happening. I should have allowed myself more time to look into my other images I collocated and try to work with them instead of focusing on a potential outcome.  So for that reason I need to improve on for allowing to work with more and experiment.

For further artist inspiration I would have liked to hear some suggestions but none were given.
For the overall concept the group could see a colour scheme which they liked of the use of blues involved but then orange would join in and give it more life to which they had no problem with. I feel they did see potentially good ideas running through as I did basically dedicate a sketch book to running an idea through.

Eliza Bennet

A Woman's Work Is Never Done flesh/ thread

A Woman's Work Is Never Done flesh/ thread

Social media was how I came across Bennet work, and this certain piece really caught my attention.
        ‘A Woman's Work Is Never Done – flesh/ thread
Series of photographs of bennet literally sewing the top layer of her skin to present a worn out working hand, which you would normally see on a man’s hand after a hard days graft doing ‘man’s jobs’.  As bennet talks about her work, it is directed at both genders but who have ‘women jobs’ as she explains the likes of cleaning, caring and catering. But those jobs are hard work and that’s what bennet is hoping her audience understand with this as I say ‘extreme’ way of showing this notion.
I feel I have to talk about this as it really inspired me of how simply it isn’t about media of a pen or pencil and a canvas or paper, using yourself as the art work to which communicates to the audience directly to show how as an artist bennet feels. Its courage which I feel every artist/designer needs to push themselves in their profession- make people talk, make them gossip make them have their opinion and stamp on it just how I’ am by wanting to write about bennet in a positive way, as this work really made me see the bigger picture of how Bennet using this ‘womanly’ way of embroidery to show these sexist humans that embroidery or even women’s work isn’t easy and we do graft as any other human being. I work and go to university that’s two jobs. I may not have worn out hands but I do work as hard as anyone- I never compare I never have and never will as people do have certain work strengths which people can be better than others but I believe everyone tries there best in a job that they love or even like, so for Bennet to create this strong and brave move just gives women and even men a positive and some sort of sense of relief to say “yes I do work hard”

Chantal De Gaudio

Framed size 126 x 84 cm

London based artist. Taking inspiration from gaudio is how I have interrupted her way to capture the audience than her actual work. Gaudio work is very powerful but it’s the message behind it that makes it more powerful to the audience- the works between masculine and feminine of both being very powerful and dominant beings.
The usage of colour involved in Gaudio works are so lively and energetic to the audience and the marks used to create that wilderness of flowers being blossomed on branches is reflected beautifully. The strong mark making lines of the branches are very bold and strong to which you can see that’s the masculine lines and combined with soft pastel colours of the blossoms with rich gold colours blooming out shows the feminine side. Having the two combined together creates a very dominate bold piece for both genders.

MMU Degree Show.

18th JUNE.  The degree show was defiantly an eye opener for myself, you don’t realise when you attend degree shows or art galleries that these creators have been in the same boat as myself, they all started off as first years, confused of what pathway they may take, what risks they may take, and most likely doubted there selves and the style of how they communicate- does it fit in the real world?
Walking through benzie just how I normally do, walking towards the textile department ready to see what this studio has transformed into. It was creative. The whole transformation was creative and to then see the work flow together was even more creative. Walking up the floors seeing the likes of graphics and film was different. Even being in the same building you don’t tend to go up any floors especially to graphics or films floor. But the stuff they had created was on par with textiles. The rooms were so bright and well coloured and seeing the hard work and dedication towards these artworks was very moving.

The first work that caught my eye was a textile in practice student named Annie Baker. The picture shown is Baker work that was presented at the show.
This piece was just my style. It’s simple but yet a lot of work went into this outcome, the lines which are hand painted are so crisp and bold and would fit into a modern interior. In the bio Baker mentions her interest in surface and textiles which is a strong interest of mine also. Mark making is key to her work to be a wallpaper designer and you can clearly see this in her work that the mark making is how she communicates. In the bio its interesting of how she is wanting to became a wallpaper designer of designing/working with a high-end company or creating her own brand- me wanting to go down the same field as Baker is very useful information of me not knowing many high end companies is very useful source for me. Be very positive to hear of Annie baker’s success and wish her all the best in her career as a wallpaper designer.

3D design students created this exciting and ‘funky’ piece of work. When I saw it for the first time it just caught my eye straight away I thought “Oh wow. That looks funky” I just think it’s beautiful. The colour, the ‘fringing’ it’s just so very contempary for 2015 especially having fringing to it- everyone loves a good fringe. The colours being so bold and in your face just cheer up a gloomy day.

I didn’t know if you could or could not sit on these chairs but I didn’t want to test the theory in case I broke one- but to me wanting to sit on these chairs/ sun loungers I felt it captured its audience as that is the purpose of wanting to sit and use them for day to day intentions. They just look so comfy and very classy all ideas of using them and where they could be placed were in my head. Just loved them. What I took from this art work was clientele. This work was done for a purpose it was produced to a certain standard, clients asked them, gave these students a brief to work to and from reading the bio, these students certainly pushed the bar.

Farzana Ullah. Wow. Literally took my breath away, I didn’t know what to do I felt like I needed to touch it, stroke it, take picture or take it home. This piece is incredible.
This piece looks like wallpaper but a twist it’s a very interactive wallpaper. Like I said Wow. That is what you say literally straight away and you embrace it a little more and realise this piece has a 3D element to it- just want to touch it! The colours the texture the surface of it all is amazing and for a wallpaper to be that interactive is incredible... the only thought was where would its cliental be? Would it be Gallery or interiors?
I love layers. Layering and layering all day is ideal for me and to see this standard of layering is breath taking. I just couldn’t believe it. With Ullah work it is beautiful but only Ullah could do that where for me it is too complicated and over powering but to look at is lovely but not my style. From Ullah work I do take inspiration of knowing if I keep the layering and texture on going I could possible produce work to a similar standard and that’s what I like to think.

The students I have spoken about have let me have an insight to what I could achieve one day and its exciting but scary, but all of them have gave me advice from the works of be original keep to your strengths but as well take the risk by collaborating and keep to how you communicate through the use of textiles.
