Locating: Evaluation

Having two projects running alongside each other has not been as bad as I imagined it to be, luckily with the live brief I chosen the deadline was 2-3 weeks before the deadline for the unit.          Adamley being the chosen brief I found it an exciting brief to have part in, I learned how to work up to a client’s standards by paying so much attention to the brief written, own initiative of personally emailing the company to have visits and to keep in contact with them throughout as well as working to brief that isn't exactly my specialism. The whole point of this unit is to engage with the outside world and as I've said with own initiative of keeping in contact with Adamley I feel that I have kept a good engagement with the company and an engagement to the standard of work produced for them.. The outcome of my work is traditional, lively and contempt just what Adamley specifically wrote in the brief. Using a contempt idea of geometric prints being the ‘new thing’ now and working that into the Archive of Adamley motifs to bring that traditional feel with them mixed together gives the deigns a lively feel to menswear collection.

Self-initiated brief running alongside Adamley and the self-taking inspiration from Adamleys traditional approach I turned my designs to wallpaper but the self-took and approach of figurative and then into marks where the brief split into 2 collections. To which I have a mini collection and now a placement minimal (PM) collection... both the same colour pallets but toned down for PM, the drawings coming from the same source but both turned into different outcomes from different artist inspirations to help encourage the designs more for the mini project the inspiration of William Morris and Timorous Beasties London Tolle pushed my designs into figurative works of art. To where the PM collection was inspired by the European market of Eco and Marimekko of the minimal, simple arrangement of the designs.

I feel that I have met to the LO of engagement with the live and even the self as well as making sure the work produced is to the right audience.. Adamley audience being Adamley, and from Adamley there audience is for menswear. For the self, Mini and PM are both for the contract market to which I feel would suit the design being allocated in an office like space with the visualisations achieving that. Overall the Locating unit has been a challenged but I know how to plan my time wisely and have learnt to plan my days of doing what on each day to keep on track.

Locating:Self Initiated- 06 Tutorial

DEADLINE WEEK-

Now I’ am doing two projects I’m finding it easier to name them instead of both being called self-initiated brief. MINI project is the figurative (original theme) and the 2nd I've named Placement Minimal.
Mini project has come on from last week as now have designs that are figurative... one of the designs I had a purple background but where the motifs should be purple to portray that background was still white it didn't look right so could I tweak that to purple like the original background. the image below is the design that was suggested to tweak which now looks miles better.. I got the feedback that to play around with it more if I wanted to as I’m only going to submit 2 final designs for this mini brief. So just to allow myself to experiment with it and the chosen palette and to get the designs ready and in context.

Placement Minimal collection(PM)- Eco had a huge part in my designs as I really made my marks simple so I could work with them easily... I starting introducing colour from the mini project but the colours that I found to be very minimal in that palette which Alex was happy with as even though they are the same palette they are different as I can tweak the tones of the chosen 6 colours. For the PM collection I just needed to gather more designs now and start putting them into context so I can have a play around with them and actually visualise them.

Simple Marks

My audience is for the contract market, ideally an office space, purely because office spaces are very minimal and simple with a lot of grey, white and black in them, so I feel my designs will fit perfectly in that environment.
Im very impressed with this design already, as how its placed on the wall it gives the area a minimal but sophisticated effect.. the feedback given was to create these designs and get them straight into context to see how effective the placement will look.
So for this final week it’s now time to crack on!

Locating:Self initiated- 05 Tutorial

Arranged a tutorial with Alex so he knows I’m on track.
I got mixed response really as it was clear I had this figurative approach to the designs but where they for my own benefit or not? Was my concept meant to be visible? I honestly could not answer the questions given as found them hard to understand... so I had to make a decision. Abstract/Scandinavian designs OR Beastie inspired work/ quirky...
From that decision we talked on how I can do 2 collections – A mini collection of the figurative designs & the main collection being minimal mark making to which with two collections I will need two colour pallets as they aren’t the same any more.. So the mini would consist of the colours chosen already and the new collection will be based on minimal, abstract designs. To take the minimal further I’m needing more marks to create so having to go back into my drawings and photos to generate enough stuff to have a play and work with.
From the marks that I create, Alex has suggested before that the way I work is very Danish and Scandinavian from how I use my marks. Suggested companies:
-          Jab Anstoetz
-          Kendix.nl
-          Almedahls
-          Kvadrat.dk
-          Marimekko
-          Eco.se
Eco was suggested on how they work with the composition, they arrange the work not just an ordinary wallpaper to give the designs more of a minimal feel. Which I never thought about before of me arranging the motifs to where I want them instead of putting them straight into a basic repeat pattern.

I have heard of a few of these companies and especially Marimekko from the last unit who as I company I’m really interested in their designs. If my work caters to the European market more I’m needing to design for that market from now on and look more into the European companies to be inspired by instead of the British market.
Research into Eco and Marimekko.

Locating: Live Outcomes.

The 5 designs I am pleased with and I feel that they have shown my theme Geo VS. Paisley really well... How many designs ive produced in a short space of time im more happy about as each one im happy with and I feel the 5 deigns are up to Adamleys standards and cover the brief outcomes as my designs are lively and contemp, I have chosen geometric shapes as they are lively and contemp now and mixed with a paisley print which is the traditional side just gives it more of a contempt look. The audience i feel the designs cater for as the colour choices have worked perfectly giving the hanks a masculine feel. I’m looking forward to hopefully hear off Adamley and see what they liked or even disliked about my designs for them.

Locating:06-Live Tutorial

All designs are 84cm and after a long day the designs are narrowed down to 5. Now they are picked and due to some of the Photoshop designs being bit pix-elated, (which seems to happen a lot in my designs for some reason...) so the Photoshop designs I changed into illustrator so no pixels are in them.
Due to having a hand in extended im wanting to hand in on Wednesday as the Adamley deadline was on a Wednesday... so from that I have know
chosen my final designs and put them into context I have produced A3 boards for my designs to go on. Due to having the deadline extended I emailed Joanne the final 5 and have printed out version available.
Two of my favourites are A1 & A3... They are how I visualised the designs to be like. A1 is the right colour balance and is what exactly I wanted to create in the design of the nice paisley print with a bold geometric print on top also the colour used was a mixture of Adamley and Paul smith and they have worked perfectly together.  A5 was my risk as it was very like Adamleys work with having a border around the design as well as having two designs together with a subtle geo shape involved, as it wasn’t like my other designs.. The reason I chose to finalise this design is due to the colour as again the balance between Adamley palette and Paul Smith just gives this design a masculine effect even with a floral print.

Locating: Self initiated- 04 Tutorial

For that week I was unable to attend both Monday tutorials.
So far I have carried on with these textured effects and have been picking out elements that what work well as textured marks. The colour palette has come from my own photos of certain colour I have picked out from them.  18 colour swatches ready to use in my designs which I will properly not use all of them as it is a big palette to choose from. In my textured works I’ve been adding snips of colour to them.

Again I have not really focused much time on the self-due to handing in Adamley on the 03/02/16.
Introducing grey to the design.

Line drawings in repeat

Locating: 05-Live Brief

A lot has happened in a week.
I have been dedicated to illustrator of creating the designs into patterns and then into swatches and then using the pen tool to create the geo shapes, I thought by now learned that technique that the majority of my designs would be illustrator based but I do like my simple designs so some of the pattern repeats are simple to which then I went back to my comfort and I started creating designs in Photoshop using different Motifs and making them into repeat patterns. In total I had 6 designs being illustrator based and 4 in Photoshop.

Paul Smith Colour Inspiration
The colour palette on a few designs is a mixture of Adamley and Paul smith... The designs I have completely changed by using different colours and different motifs from each Archives. The colour inspiration from Paul Smith (Image) was from Paul Smith website, it stood out for me from the balance of colours used, I liked how the pink is involved as pink tones are a masculine colour also when mixed with blues, purples and greys – This Palette did fit perfectly in with the theme as it did give a masculine effect to the designs when placed on the paisley and Geometric print.

I have in total done about 13 designs, I feel that 13 is a good body of work as each design is unique, I haven’t produced any more designs now I have just been going back into the designs and re designing them, Some of the designs I have just stripped back and made so simple and others are very geometric. The aim for this new week is to get the designs narrowed down and put onto boards ready for the hand in.
